About Me: Tastes

This page presents what I like and / or prefer in various fields (music, movies, food, etc.) as well as those things I hate.

Fan Posts

I made up the expression "fan posts" to refer to these little pages where I show my love for some subjects.

Music

I love a wide range of music, although I hate country. I particulary love Nightwish, Evanescence, Papa Roach and Linkin Park, although this list could change within the next five minutes.

I usually listen to music in English much more than in French, my mother tongue, but I love Georges Brassens and very little Quebec artists.

My taste has evolved a lot with time. I used to be much more into pop and pop punk, but, apart from Avril Lavigne and some rare artists, I am moving away from these.

I made my playlist for myself. I will eventually build some kind of system to show my recommendations and un-recommendations.

My favorite song is Ghost Love Score, by Nightwish. The lyrics are unfortunately nothing but a very poor transcription of the beauty of this song.

Movies

I always had a strong passion for movies, ever since, as a kid, I started saying, despite a few ungrown teeth, that I would be making my own movies one day.

My taste in movies has refined a lot over the past few years. I have grown to hate most hollywoodian movies and search for movies of a different, less schema-based standard.

My preference goes to unordinary movies: those that break the normal course of telling a story, those with special colors, etc. My favorite director is Tim Burton. The colors in his movies are awesome.

I also like George Mélies,, an awesome French director who made movies in the early 20th century.

Just to name a few movies I like: Beetlejuice, Batman, Corpse Bride, Titanic, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Great Dictator, Moulin Rouge, Psycho, Edward Scissorhands, Carrie, The Princess Bride, The Butterfly Effect, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Life Is Beautiful, The Others, Run Lola Run.

In general, I am more likely to enjoy a movie if it is rather dreamy, straying away from methodical realism to escape into a more free world. La science des rêves (The Science of Sleep) by Michel Gondry is an example.

I used to enjoy teen movies a lot, but this taste has faded a lot, probably as I grew older.

I have never been truly initiated to Asian movies, but many I have seen were excellent, and there are more I wish to see.

I think the British make excellent comedies.

Literature

While I listen to a lot of music in English and watch a lot of movies that were not made in French, I do read a lot of French literature—either from France or from Quebec, my home province.

My favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien. I also love Stephen King.

I absolutely love poetry. Some poets I like are Gaston Miron, Émile Nelligan, Arthur Rimbaud and Charles Baudelaire.

Among the books I have loved and that are not from authors mentioned above, I would like to note The Arabian Nights, Gone With The Wind, The Little Prince, Emily series by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

I read very few comics. I however have read nearly all from the Astérix series. My boyfriend, Éric, has introduced me to Liberty Meadows, by Frank Cho. I have fallen in love with those. Mike the OCD raccoon is so cute!

I just can't write humor. I can make jokes in real life, but I just can't write down something funny. My books tend to be more serious, but they are seldom dark and depressing.

Tongue Pleasures

I'm talking about food, by the way. Because I'm always talking about food: it's so yummy, delightful and wondeful.

I am generally not a big fan of junk meals, apart from cheeseburgers and hamburgers. I however love all those fat and salty things you can think of: onion rings, chips, crisps, etc. I am addicted to black pepperjack Doritos, but I'll also go through the bag within two hours if you don't hold me and they are actually Nachos-flavored.

I can also, however, eat some food that is actually good for me. I adore fruits of all kinds or almost, with a passion for mangoes and berries. I also love eating fruits with lots of whipped cream so I don't look like I'm actually minding my weight. When I'm in the right mood, I'd eat nothing but a yummy ceasar salad for breakfast, dinner and supper.

I don't like beef and like pork less and less, but I absolutely love seafood, above all shrimps, of which I would gladly eat industrial quantities every day.

The list of food I don't like is rather extensive: raisins, zucchinis, beans, coffee, mushrooms, apples (above all if they are baked), cabbage, beef, sausage, potatoes, fennel, crumble. carrot cake, nuts, pumpkins, tiramisu, chocolate with mint, tomato soup, cantaloupe, pickles.

Did I mention chocolate fondue? I didn't mention chocolate fondue? It is a crime for me not to have mentionned chocolate fondue any earlier! Isn't it such a great pleasure of dipping delightful fruits in a tasy chocolate sauce? And then, when someome tells you "chocolate is bad for your health", you just have to say "Hey, but I'm eating fruits!"

Those Things I Want

Physical Appearance

I believe women look much better than men in general, although there are men who do look really good.

I'd love to have a child with "Phoenix" as a last name, this way I would be sure he or she would be gorgeous, and could hope he or she inherits his or her mother's intelligence. If you don't get the Phoenix thing, I suggest you to take a look at some Phoenix celebrities (links will lead you to a Google search): River, Rain, Joaquin and Summer. They also have a sister named Liberty, but on the only pictures of her I could find, she is five or something like it. I'm not attracted to children.

I love blue eyes, like a lot of people, but my real preferance goes to green eyes. I also love black hair, and if it is long, curly and on top of the head of a woman, it just makes it better.

I prefer women who look natural, without too much makeup. I don't mind piercings and tattoos (the latter not in the face or neck) and usually like them, unless they are just plain ugly. I don't mind Chinese or Japanese symbols, but they are meaningless to me. It is not an offense to either one of these people, it's just that my culture is different and that I know so little of China or Japan that I wouldn't feel it appropriate for me to have a tattoo devoted to them.

I like smiles. I want the people around me to be able to smile, and do so sincerely. I don't like when people are stiff and too straight.

Animals

Apart from my love-hate relationship with human beings, I love several species of animals.

I love cats and, actually, pretty much every feline. I love dogs too, but cats rock more. Naturally, my kitten, Béatrice, gets preference over any other cat—or any other animal, actually. I believe she feels the same about me.

I believe it's great that platypus exist, because it gives us a reason to laugh when everything seems dark and desperate. I don't believe in God but, if you do, how can you believe he is to be feared when he had the idea of making...those?

I hate pretty much every paw-less thing that crawls, apart from snakes, and am generally afraid of them.

Computers

I love computers. They rock.

I use Windows XP, but it is more out of habit and a (now outdated) wish for full compatibility with my mother's computer.

Programs I love include SciTE, Adobe Photoshop and iTunes.

I use Mozilla Firefox as a browser, although I still use Internet Explorer for the rare incompatible websites I visit. I do belong in the "Internet Explorer sucks!" group.

I have not yet found an email service that had all the features I wish. Yahoo! Mail has directories, which I absolutely love, but it often puts spam in my mail box and messages I wish to read in my spam box, although the latter is more rare. GMail receives far too much spam. Hotmail has no directories but, up to now, it is the one that seems to have the most satisfying spam protection...perhaps the fact that it blocks emails that are not spam (like The Fanlistings Network email, at some point in 2007) is a proof of how strict they can be...

Websites

Oh, websites! I could certainly not tell how many websites I have visited in my life. Even on weeks where I barely go on the computer, I most certainly discover at least one or two new website, and that's when I'm doing neither of these: joining fanlistings, updating my fanlistings, surfing personal websites in search of new ones, or stumbling. I must certainly have visited over 4000 different websites in my life. While I have mostly kept track of the ones I found best, I have also lost a lot of URLs and many websites have closed. I used to visit, for example, Imperfect Angel, a fansite dedicated to Leonardo DiCaprio. The site has closed since then. Many personal sites I would visit have closed too, like Apple-Green.com. My taste has also changed and websites I used to find great have now fallen quite low in my ladder of quality.

I love reading blogs. While many are boring accounts of a person's life, some webmasters are either capable of transforming this life into something interesting by using the right vocabulary words, while others simply talk about something else than their life; that is when the webmaster is not one of those who does both. The three blogs I read regularly are Jem's (jemjabella.co.uk), Amanda's (jing-wen.com) and Rhiannon's (petshopgirlsreviews.com). There are however a few other blogs I will read occasionnally when I'm in the mood for it (like Becky (babblative.com), Vera (It all comes down to...), Sarah (3till7.net)).

The website I visit the most, however, is surely The Fanlistings Network. I compulsively check my RSS feed (the Firefox live bookmarks) about once every few minutes.

In terms of message boards, I am a member of Push The Limit (Jewel), Bebedawl Board (Julie), The Fanlistings Network Message Board (Jewel), Celestial MB (Julie), SNOG! (J, I believe) and The Taboolistings Message Board (Julie, I'm a staffer there).

I am also a member of Listal (my profile), Stumble Upon (my profile), Flixster (my profile).

Other Things

I despise white socks. They are ugly, they get dirty and they stand out, jumping into your eyes when you're least expecting it.

I don't understand racism and sexism.

I wish child pornography didn't exist.

I love flowers, they're so pretty and they often smell good. By the way, daisies stink. My favorite flowers are iris, although I really love roses, lilies, peonies, monkshood, and more.

I love water. I love fountains, creeks, rivers, lakes, the sea.

I have much interest in geography ever since I learned to read.

I am in love with impressionism. My favorite artist is Renoir. I also like fantasy art, such as that of Amy Brown or Brian Froud.

I love poetry. Rhymes and alliterations are wonderful.

I love watching tap dance—I never tried dancing it. I also enjoy watching figure skating. I'm also a hockey fan. I don't watch it on TV, but I love attending matches.
