A Few Hints / Tips
I use Adobe Photoshop CS to create my icons. I generally use the following effects:
- Duplicate the layer and set the duplicate blend mode to screen. This makes the image lighter.
- Duplicate the layer and set the duplicate blend mode to overlay. This makes colors more saturated. It can also make dark areas even darker and light areas even lighter.
- Add a texture and change the blend mode until I get a good effect. Reducing the opacity of the texture layer often helps.
- Add a layer with a solid color and do as the previous tip says.
- Create a border on a new layer and change its blend mode.
Note: the "blend mode" is the drop-down menu that appears on the layer information...thingy. The default is "Normal". It can be set to "Dissolve", "Screen", "Lighten", "Pin Light", etc.
